Charlotte's Stephen Jackson may or may not be named the Eastern Conference's Player of the Week today. I really have no idea. Make no mistake about it, Jackson is the league's hottest player, whether or not he gets the award. Jackson's last four GR totals: (41.3, 38.2, 39.4, 41.2). Remember, GR is scaled to look like a points total, so you can look at those numbers as if Jackson were a 40 points per game scorer over his last four outings. His actual high point total is 30 during this streak. GR tries to capture the overall contribution of a player to his team's Offensive Rating and point differential in a given game. While Jackson's offensive numbers have been excellent, it's his defense that really has NBAPET popping. The system measures dMULT for each player in each game, according to his most likely box score counterpart. In Jackson's case--and remember we haven't gone to the video to confirm whom Jackson has been been guarding--here are his last four dMULT figures:
PLAYER GUARDED dMULT
bell,raja .631
johnson,wesley .606
wade,dwyane .600
richardson,jason .668
Because dMULT can be so extreme for any one game, it has a floor of .600 in the GR formulation (and a ceiling of 1.400). That means Jackson has held his counterparts at least 33.2 percent below their average season production in each of his last four games. While I would never make any definitive statements based on a one-game dMULT score, taken as a group, I think the pattern is clear: Jackson has been playing some hellacious defense, the kind that deserves recognition. Jackson may be honored by the league today; as I wrote, his offensive numbers have been excellent and he grabbed headlines by recording the first-ever triple-double in Charlotte Bobcats history on Saturday. If he's overlooked, though, consider this fodder for argument. For the season, Jackson has a .804 dMULT. Again, that means in any given outing, he can be expected to hold his opponent's production 20 percent under its normal level. The Bobcats have slipped from first to 14th in Defensive Rating since last season, but it's not Jackson's fault.

FRIDAY'S BOX SCORES & RECAPS
NOTE: Glossary is at bottom of page.
THUNDER 89, CELTICS 84 (box): The Thunder once again held sway at the foul line in a game in which the two teams combined to shoot 4-of-30 from the floor in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma City has been outscored at the line just twice this season. Russell Westbrook scored 31 points as the Thunder survived without Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. Rajon Rondo tweaked his hamstring and missed the last half of the fourth quarter for the Celtics.

76ERS 90, BUCKS 79 (box): With Offensive Ratings of 89.0 and 91.8 over the weekend, it's safe to say that the Bucks are flailing for answers. Drew Gooden is always productive. He's also always expendable. When he's leading your offense in shots attempted, you're in trouble. The Bucks went 0-of-12 from the three-point line in the game.

RAPTORS 106, ROCKETS 96 (box): Andrea Bargnani scored 26 points, the first of a pair of sterling performances over the weekend. Bargnani is off to an excellent start. He's upped his usage rate from .224 to .293, while keeping his True Shooting Percentage steady (from .552 to .549). He's taken 13 percent more of his shots inside the arc and while his percentage there isn't great, it's led to a spike in his foul-drawing rate. He's shooting free throws better and hitting 43 percent from three-point range. His overall game is still lacking, but he's become a damn good scorer.

WIZARDS 89, GRIZZLIES 86 (box): The Grizzlies get the schizo award for the weekend by losing to the Wizards and beating the Heat. On Friday, O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley both missed threes in the final seconds, sandwiched around a big offensive rebound by Zach Randolph. JaVale McGee looked as good as I've seen him yet over the weekend. On Friday, he put up 10 points and 12 boards, six offensive, and blocked three shots in 38 minutes. He's really learning to use his length and agility to his advantage. He's still prone to picking up bad fouls because he slaps at shot attempts rather than going straight up, but he's better at staying on the court for longer stretches. He's cut back on bad shots, which has made him a low-usage, high efficiency center. You can win with those, especially if they rebound and block shots as well as McGee has this season. The one problem with his game right now is that he tends to get overly ambitious with his passes to cutters, leading to a spike in turnover rate.

LAKERS 112, TIMBERWOLVES 95 (box): The Lakers won and it wasn't close, but let's talk about the Timberwolves, who are emerging as one of my favorite teams to write about. Michael Beasley had another solid outing. His frontcourt mates Darko Milicic and Kevin Love gave him varying degrees of assistance. As usual. One had 23 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, six blocks and two steals. The other had zero points and seven rebounds. Of course the one with the big game was ... Darko. What?! Milicic more than doubled his previous season-high GR. His rebound and assist totals led the Timberwolves. This may be my favorite stat line of the season to date.

HORNETS 108, CAVALIERS 101 (box): David West pumped in 34 points and led the Hornets 44-32 end on point sin the paint. This was the first time this season that New Orleans gave up more than 100 points, but their 105.1 Defensive Rating was unremarkable. This was easily the fastest-paced Hornets game of the season. It was just one of those things--neither of these teams has played particularly fast this season.

SPURS 94, JAZZ 82 (box): Once upon a time, the Jazz had as dominant a home advantage as any team in the league. Friday's loss to San Antonio dropped Utah to 3-3 at Energy Solutions Arena. (The road story is way different, but we'll get to that a little later.) The Spurs held Utah to 5-of-13 shooting in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Jazz 24-14 in the period to secure the win. This start by San Antonio merits close examination. Instead of mixing and matching his top players in different units as in the past, Gregg Popovich has his five best players in the first unit and he's letting them play big minutes for the most part. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, a rejuvinated Richard Jefferson and DeJuan Blair looks like a heckuva lineup on paper. It's been even better on the court, and Blair is off to a relatively slow start.

BULLS 88, MAVERICKS 83 (box): This was the Bulls' first win this season in a game that NBAPET had flagged them as an underdog, so this has to rate as Chicago's signature win so far this season. That's saying something for a team that has crawled into fourth in our current power ratings. Chicago has the league's 8th-best point differential against the sixth-toughest schedule. The game against Dallas could have gone either way. It was about even with six minutes to go, but Chicago's overwhelming advantage on the boards finally proved too much for Dallas to overcome. Chicago grabbed 20-of-45 offensive rebound chances and held a 25-8 edge in second-chance points. Taj Gibson (18 boards, eight offensive) and Joakim Noah (17 boards, five offensive) outrebounded the Mavericks by themselves. Gibson chased down several key rebounds down the stretch, making up for his inability to chase Dirk Nowitzki off his spots on the perimeter. Nowitzki had 36 points, but just six in the final quarter.

KINGS 86, NETS 81 (box): The Kings posted their best Defensive Rating of the season in their slowest-paced game, a combination which helped Sacramento snap a six-game losing streak. Nevertheless, Paul Westphal seems to have completely lost his feel for what his rotation should be. Jason Thompson can't get on the court, but Luther Head is starting and playing big minutes. Me no likey.

KNICKS 125, WARRIORS 119 (box): The Warriors have been getting pounded on the boards since David Lee went down, though that wasn't really what sunk them against the Knicks. This was a Nelliesque showing on the defensive end for the Warriors, who showed some serious signs of regression in that area over the weekend. Raymond Felton scored 35 points on 17 shots and handed out 11 assists. That's some wicked production. Amar'e Stoudemire added 26 points on 12 shots.

SATURDAY'S BOX SCORES & RECAPS
NOTE: Glossary is at bottom of page.
BOBCATS 123, SUNS 105 (box): The Suns have gotten drilled with Steve Nash out of the lineup, but his plus-minus numbers have actually been way down this season, so you can't chalk it all up to that. Perhaps what's really hurting the Suns is that Nash's absence removes Goran Dragic from the second unit. Dragic has been fine and the starters have mostly held their own, or at least did on Friday, but the reserves got hammered. As mentioned in the intro, Stephen Jackson record the Bobcats' first-ever triple-double in the game.

MAGIC 90, PACERS 86 (box): Roy Hibbert was again productive for Indiana, but was literally abused by Dwight Howard in the pivot. Howard shot 19 free throws and Hibbert's time was limited to 28:33 by foul trouble. Hibbert was productive while on the floor--19 points and 12 rebounds-- but Howard controlled Hibbert in the paint and even decked Hibbert with an elbow in the first half, drawing a technical. Hibbert has improved, perhaps as much as any player in the league, but Howard isn't about to treat him as an equal any time soon. That matchup aside, the Pacers actually were the superior inside team in the game, with a 16-5 edge in offensive boards, leading to a 24-6 advantage in second-chance points. It's really what kept the Pacers in the game.

MAVERICKS 98, HAWKS 93 (box): Dallas' 38-19 edge in bench points offset Al Horford's 20 points and 20 rebounds as the Hawks dropped their fifth game out of their last seven. Jamal Crawford went 2-of-10 from the floor and Atlanta wouldn't have gotten any bench production at all if Crawford's namesake, the rookie Jordan, hadn't come off the bench for 10 second-half points, nearly shooting the Hawks back into the game. As an aside, Atlanta announcer and NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins was effusive in his praise for Dirk Nowitzki (against whom he actually played once--Wilkins' last year and Nowitzki's first) but unless I was hearing things, he kept calling him "Derek." Was I hearing things?

GRIZZLIES 97, HEAT 95 (box): Rudy Gay sank a fadeaway from the elbow at the buzzer in Memphis' most spirited game of the season. The loss dropped Miami to 0-4 in games decided by five points or less. How soon till the "Heat need a clear-cut closer" stories start? Have they already? Do they need one? Dwyane Wade sat this one out, but Eddie House came off the bench to hit six three-pointers for the Heat. Memphis coach Lionel Hollins juggled his lineup, with rookie Xavier Henry starting for O.J. Mayo (and going 1-of-9 from the floor) and Darrell Arthur starting for Zach Randolph. Mayo scored just two points on 1-of-7 shooting in his reserve role, but Randolph had 21 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive) in 27 minutes off the bench. Randolph's work keeping the ball alive off the offensive glass was really the difference down the stretch. Memphis had a 23-7 edge in second-chance points in the game. Memphis snapped a five-game skid, so Hollins' Jayhawk strategy may persist.

THUNDER 82, BUCKS 81 (box): Brandon Jennings missed a late three and Drew Gooden's putback left the Bucks a point short. They fouled Eric Maynor on the subsequent inbound pass, but were out of timeouts. With :00.6 left, Maynor missed both free throws and Andrew Bogut's full-court heave was off the mark. Thus Oklahoma City won its second straight on the road without Kevin Durant. Scott Skiles tightened his rotation, but still couldn't find any offensive flow. The Bucks shot 37.2 percent from the floor, hit 3-of-18 threes and assisted on just 11 of 29 made field goals.

The game marked a coming-out party of sorts for Spurs rookie Tiago Splitter, who scored 18 points, 11 more than his previous season high. His GR (19.8) drawfed his previous best (5.3). NUGGETS 107, NETS 103 (box): The Nuggets eked by in an odd game in which Chauncey Billups took just three shots in 33 minutes. Carmelo Anthony carried the bulk of the offensive load, but the Nuggets' advantage with its second unit on the floor was really the difference in the game. Gary Forbes posted Denver's best plus-minus but instead of it coming at J.R. Smith's expense, the latter played well in his most extended action in a week and a half.

JAZZ 103, TRAIL BLAZERS 94 (box): After dropping a pair of games at home, Utah re-discovered its winning template: the Jazz fell behind by double-digits on the road, then roared from behind with a huge fourth quarter. C.J. Miles caught fire in the final period, scoring 17 points and hitting all five of his shots from the floor, all of which were threes. Utah outscored Portland 38-20 in the fourth and improved to 6-2 on the road this season.

KNICKS 124, CLIPPERS 115 (box): Danilo Gallinari scored 31 points on 11 shots and went 13-of-13 from the free throw line. The Knicks were 43-of-51 from the line as a team, offsetting a 44-point onslaught of whirling-dervish dunks from Clippers rookie Blake Griffin. Amar'e Stoudemire--Griffin's box score counterpart--had 39 points and 11 boards. The counterpart scores are why despite huge counting numbers, neither Griffin or Stoudemire led his respective team in GR. The Knicks won their third straight against the lesser lights of the Pacific coast, while the Clipper dropped their ninth in a row. Gallinari's foul-drawing rate is more than double what it was last year and is also more than twice the league average. He's becoming much more than a three-point shooting big man. Well, he was anyway, but it's become even more true of late. He's 35-of-36 from the line over his last three games.

SUNDAY'S BOX SCORES & RECAPS
NOTE: Glossary is at bottom of page.
RAPTORS 102, CELTICS 101 (box): Paul Pierce missed a fadeaway at the buzzer, preserving Toronto's win. The Celtics played without Rajon Rondo, who sat out because of the hamstring injury he suffered against the Thunder on Friday. The Celtics' offense plugged along fine without him, but Boston's Defensive rating was its second-worst of the season. It wasn't necessarily Rondo--Jose Calderon had just 11 inefficient points and two assists from the point guard position for Toronto--but the Celtics forced its second-lowest turnover percentage of the season without the disruptive guard in the lineup.

PISTONS 115, WIZARDS 110, OT (box): Andray Blatche missed a good look at a three off a kick-out from Gilbert Arenas at the buzzer of regulation, then Rip Hamilton caught fire in the overtime period for Detroit. Hamilton scored 12 points in the extra session on 5-of-6 shooting, with the only miss coming on his last attempt. Hamilton scored 27 points overall, matching his season high. JaVale McGee, whom I highlighted earlier, had 20 points and 16 rebounds (eight offensive) for Washington.

HORNETS 75, KINGS 71 (box): Good defense or bad offense? Given Sacramento's defensive track record this season, I'll opt for the latter in this one. New Orleans survived despite shooting 32 percent from the field, mostly thanks to 23 points off 22 Sacramento turnovers. At least the Kings shared their misfortune--six players committed three or more miscues.

NEWS & MOVES
Minutiae from around the league
EUROPE: "Fenerbahce Ulker has agreed to terms with big man Sean May, fortifying its frontline after losing Gasper Vidmar to injury. May (206, 26) is due in Istanbul on Tuesday and the agreement will go into effect if he passes medical exams on Wednesday." (EuroLeague.net)
From national champ and lottery pick to Gasper Vidmar's injury replacement, and in only five years.
HEAT: "Already without one key rotation member in Mike Miller, the Heat now will be without Udonis Haslem for weeks, potentially much longer. An MRI on Sunday revealed Haslem has a torn ligament in his left foot and will be out indefinitely. Heat president Pat Riley said Sunday night that he expects Haslem will play again this season but doesn't know when. (Miami Herald)
Tough news for the Heat. This costs Miami another spot-up shooter and the Heat offense has often been at its best in halfcourt sets with floor-spacers playing off of LeBron James. (Just like in Cleveland.) Now, Juwan Howard once again inherits a role larger than you'd figure he get at this stage of his career. Howard can't defend like Haslem, nor is his face-up jumper as dependable.
HORNETS/RAPTORS: "The Toronto Raptors announced Saturday they have acquired guard Jerryd Bayless, forward Peja Stojakovic (stoy-AK-o-vich) and cash considerations from the New Orleans Hornets for centre David Andersen and guards Marcus Banks and Jarrett Jack." (press release)
Covered here.
TRAIL BLAZERS: "Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden underwent successful microfracture surgery today on his left knee, it was announced by General Manager Rich Cho. Oden, 22, will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season." (press release)
I've yet to see the "surgeon horribly botched the procedure" press release.
WIZARDS: "The Wizards have completed a somewhat startling reunion, as the team has brought back swingman Alonzo Gee, according to multiple league sources. In order to make the move possible, the Wizards waived reserve point guard Lester Hudson." (Washington Post)
No this isn't quite official, but I trust Michael Lee, so here you go. Neither Gee nor Hudson saw much of the court in their initial gigs this season. In Kirk Hinrich, John Wall and Gilbert Arenas, the Wizards had plenty of point guard options. Gee gives them another wing, which is a bit of a thin area with Josh Howard still out.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of at team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
