Ah, NBA Thursday. It's the league's version of Monday Night Football, only there are two games instead of one. Actually, there are often three games on Thursday, but the non-TNT matchup generally gets treated like a writer at a cheerleader's convention. That is, he is utterly ignored and even if he weren't, there would be no one to talk to. Anyway, the weekly TNT doubleheaders are marquee events during the long slog of an NBA season. Charles, Ernie, Kenny, Kevin Harlan ... you can't beat it with a stick.

I thought about working some back channels to get Harlan to read the play-by-play from one of our Strat sims for an audio download. Then I realized that Kevin has NFL duties and his time is precious. Besides, I don't actually know him. Such a request would surely be met with scorn, if not outright fear. Alas I was left to play Harlan's signature voice in my head as I read the play-by-play scroll. I served as the imaginary analyst and, I have to tell you, my drop-ins were always clever and my commentary spot-on. I may award myself an imaginary Emmy.

After all, Sim Season is nothing if not a work of imagination, a way to occupy our hoops-starved thoughts as the news out of New York grows more grim with each passing day. I had a Tweeter muse that he wishes he could import the stats from our simulation into his fantasy league. Would that actually fill a void? Is there actually a demand for that? Imagine -- a fantasy league based on a make-believe simulation. The Platonian overtones make one's mind reel.

On the virtual courts, the games weren't nearly as dramatic as they were on Wednesday. Most of all, I was happy that Denver and Portland got into the books as the last two teams to play a game. Now, my projection, evaluation and tracking system (NBAPET) is up and running full bore. It requires each team to play a game before spitting out all the advanced metrics you know and love. Of course, it's too early for leaderboards, right? Do you really need to know that Derrick Rose has accumulated 0.6 WARP to date? I didn't think so.

That's how it all played out on the first TNT Thursday of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the night's action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.

Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount over the weekend for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price. The offer expires at 11:59 p.m. EST this Sunday.

NUGGETS 107, TRAIL BLAZERS 103: Denver is one of the more interesting teams in the simulation because we already know that J.R. Smith, Wilson Chandler and Kenyon Martin are committed overseas, and Ray Felton is now with the Blazers. The hit on the Nuggets' depth didn't faze George Karl's bunch early as Danilo Gallinari scored 11 points in four minutes to key a 21-2 Nuggets run. That was pretty much the game. The Blazers trailed by double digits until the closing minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge hit two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to pull Portland within three. Ty Lawson was intentionally fouled with nine seconds left. He missed the second free throw, but Aldridge missed on the other end to seal the win for Denver. On the debut front, Denver rebounding prodigy Kenneth Faried had five points and eight boards in 28 minutes and also chipped in with four steals. Aldridge had a monster game--43 points on 17-of-26 shooting to go with 13 rebounds, eight on the offensive end. And, hey look! Greg Oden was back on the court.

GRIZZLIES 113, JAZZ 95: The Grizzlies-Jazz encounter would have been the widely-ignored matchup on Thursday, but it's an interesting one. Of course, let's face it, I find them all interesting or I wouldn't be doing this. Memphis fans are no doubt looking forward to the return of Rudy Gay, the team's best player who sat out the Grizzlies' playoff run last spring because of a shoulder injury. The magical chemistry that seemed to perculate in Gay's absence created a quandary. Clearly Lionel Hollins' team is more talented with Gay than without. However, is it actually better? The answer was clear in Thursday's sim, as Gay poured in 18 first-quarter points during Memphis' 44-21 sprint out of the gate. Rookie Enes Kanter sparked an 11-0 run for Utah to begin the second quarter, but the Grizzlies led by 25 at the half and cruised to the easy win. Gay finished with 32 points. And by the way, "sprint" is an apt term for Memphis' outburst on Thursday. The Grizzlies finished with a 28-4 edge in fastbreak points.

HEAT 118, MAGIC 84: The always-polarizing Heat would have been a hot topic on Thursday as they looked to recover from their Sim Season-opening loss at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Magic was looking to recover from a home loss to Charlotte to begin its campaign. The Heat led early before Prospectus favorite Ryan Anderson scored six points to key an 11-point Orlando burst that tied the score at 39. LeBron James answered with a one-man eight-point run to reestablish Miami's upper hand. After a little nip-and-tuck action, the Heat pulled way in the second half for the blowout win. After leading just 72-67 late in the third quarter, Miami outscored Orlando 46-17 the rest of the way. Clearly, this was one of those games in which the Heat looked like a team that just can't be beaten. James scored 40, 21 in the first half and 19 in the second.
