If Dallas was really 0-2, with losses coming to Chicago and San Antonio, would the sports talkers and interwebs be burning up with Maverick obituaries? As crazy as it seems at this early juncture, that would probably be the big story from the season's first four days. That is, given the results of the rest of the league thus far. Dallas' slow start is the best narrative, the emergent story line to feed the machine. That's the way these things work.
Of course, the Mavericks' slow start--just two games, I remind you--could well be entirely explained by randomness. This isn't the NFL. Two games have almost no meaning in the NBA, no matter what happens in them. Unfortunately, as the real schedule continues to shrink, randomness could become an ever-greater factor in this NBA season, and not in a good way. How many games does the NBA season for the results to maintain legitimacy? It's a good question. And I'm not going to attempt an answer here. I've always thought 50-60 games were enough for NBA teams to sort themselves out, much fewer than their baseball brethren. This is all something to bear in mind as the league's labor dispute erases these games that we are now bringing you in simulation form.
On the virtual court, there were a lot of blowouts and a lot of home teams sending their fans home unhappy. The new-look Timberwolves were one of the road winners. Minnesota's early results suggest an exciting squad, with Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams joining forces with Kevin Love and Michael Beasley. That'd be the small-sample story I'd want emphasized, not the freaking out over two losses by the reigning champs.
That's how it all played out in nine games on Friday, putting us 2.2 percent through Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the night's action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
A reminder: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount over the weekend for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price. The offer expires at 11:59 p.m. EST this Sunday.
CELTICS 103, HAWKS 98: It was nearly a fantastic finish for the Hawks, as Joe Johnson drilled a three with 49 seconds left to pull Atlanta within a point. However, Rajon Rondo sandwiched fancy assists on Boston's last two possessions around a Marvin Williams miss to secure Boston's win. Rondo rang up 15 assists for the Celtics, who lost Paul Pierce to an injury. Pierce scored just two points on 1-of-7 shooting before going down. He is expected to miss Boston's next game. Josh Smith scored 10 of his team-high 26 points during an early Hawks surge.

SPURS 109, MAVERICKS 101: After dropping their opener at home to Chicago, the defending champion Mavericks looked to get into the win column against their intrastate rivals from San Antonio. Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki started out on fire by scoring 20 points in the first period, most of them by abusing Tim Duncan in the lane. Nevertheless, the Spurs led by a point at the half. San Antonio led by two midway through the fourth quarter when Nowitzki's three put Dallas in front. The Spurs answered with a game-ending 13-4 run to overcome Nowitzki's 39's points. The champs are 0-2.

THUNDER 120, PACERS 110: You'd think a team pinned with high expectations like Oklahoma City would enter its third game with a certain sense of urgency after dropping its first two contests. Well, urgency was exactly what the Thunder had on display as it scored the first 13 points of the game and led 37-16 after one quarter. OKC led by 20 points or more until the early fourth quarter when George Hill led a 15-0 run for the Pacers. But that only got Indiana within 11 and they couldn't pull closer than nine the rest of the way. Kevin Durant (35) and Russell Westbrook (33) paved the way with 68 combined points and the Thunder rolled up a 38-16 edge in points off the fastbreak.

SUNS 101, LAKERS 95: The Lakers lost for the first time in three outings in a contest that was close the entire way. The Lakers seemed to be pulling away midway through the fourth quarter, but rookie Markieff Morris capped a 9-0 Phoenix run to put the Suns up 84-82. Kobe Bryant put the Lakers back in front a couple of possessions later, but Phoenix reeled off eight points in a row and held off L.A. down the stretch. Bryant hit just 5-of-19 shots, his second bad outing of the young campaign. Steve Nash turned in a vintage performance for the Suns with 20 points and 14 assists. Morris chipped in with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting off the bench, getting extra court time because of Channing Frye's foul trouble.

BUCKS 106, BOBCATS 96: Stephen Jackson made his return to Charlotte, apparently intent on sticking it to Michael Jordan for trading him to Milwaukee. Jackson scored the Bobcats' first 12 points then, after he cooled off, Brandon Jennings scored 10 of his own as the Bucks established an early 11-point lead. The Bobcats edged back into the game thanks to a couple of three-pointers from prized rookie Kemba Walker. Milwaukee pulled away in the third quarter as Jennings and Jackson took turns on the offensive end, ensuring that the Bucks would not have a repeat of their 24-point second half against San Antonio on Wednesday. Jennings finished with 29 points and Jackson added 23. Milwaukee pounded the Bobcats on the glass, grabbing nearly a third of its own misses and holding an 18-7 edge in second-chance points. Walker finished with 14 points in 24 minutes for Charlotte and hit 4-of-6 from three-point range.

TIMBERWOLVES 110, 76ERS 97: The young Timberwolves have a lot of new faces and, so far, the results are promising. Minnesota crumbled down the stretch in its opener against Atlanta, but on Friday rookie Derrick Williams led the way in a strong first half and the Wolves cruised to an impressive road win. Williams finished with 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Ricky Rubio, in what may be a typical performance, took just two shots in 24 minutes and led Minnesota with six assists. Darko Milic chipped in 16 points and six blocks as the Timberwolves shot 56 percent from the floor. The Sixers fell to 1-1 despite Andre Iguodala's near triple-double.

TRAIL BLAZERS 105, CLIPPERS 98: LaMarcus Aldridge is off to a big start after scoring 36 points against the Clippers, increasing his total to a league-high 82 points in two games. Aldridge helped the Blazers finally take control of a nip-and-tuck game by scoring all eight points of Portand's 8-2 closing run. Prior to that, Eric Gordon had trimmed the lead to one with two free throws at the two-minute mark, but the Clippers went scoreless the rest of the way. The Blazers, perennially one of the NBA's best offensive rebounding teams, held a 14-4 edge in second-chance points on Friday. Greg Oden had a promising outing as he attempts to overcome his longstanding knee trouble, putting up 11 points, grabbing four offensive boards and blocking two shots in 11 minutes.

WARRIORS 124, KINGS 92: Golden State led wire to wire. The Warriors went on a 24-4 run behind strong bench play in the second quarter and blew out the Kings for their first win of the season. Golden State got strong performances up and down the roster, but of special note was the 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting by rookie Charles Jenkins. Kings rookie Jimmer Fredette fared better in his second start. After missing all six of his shots in his debut, Fredette scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and made his first two NBA three-pointers. Of course, that's just 15 shots from the field in 56 minutes over two games for player about whom there are concerns over his ability to create his own shot at the NBA level.

RAPTORS 102, CAVALIERS 80: The Raptors jumped out to an early lead thanks to the crazy-hot shooting of Andrea Bargnani, who scored 19 points in the first period. He finished with 24 in the opening half as Toronto took a nine-point lead into the break. The long, tall Italian tacked on nine more in the third and the Raptors pushed the lead to 14, then breezed through a stress-free fourth quarter. Bargnani finished with 37 points, seven boards and five assists. On Cleveland's rookie report, Kyrie Irving was limited to seven points on 2-of-11 shooting. Tristan Thompson had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting and blocked a couple of shots.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
