There has been more curiosity about Jimmer Fredette than any other player in Sim Season, which tells you a bit about what can be expected when, or if, the real NBA season tips off. Fredette didn't make the top 20 of my rookie WARP leaders yesterday because his total in that category (-0.26) didn't warrant it. He's had a couple of decent outings but for the most part, he's been inefficient and, frankly, pretty much missing in action.
On Saturday, The Jimmer showed up.
Fredette put on a BYU-vintage performance in the first period of Sacramento's game at Chicago, hitting five three-pointers and scoring 19 of his 22 points in a 12-minute flurry. In the real NBA, these kind of breakout performances from rookies represent some of the most memorable moments in a young season. Because the spree happened in Chicago, against Tom Thibodeau's vaunted defense, you can bet highlights from the game would have led off the looping highlights show on NBA TV. For good reason.
There really isn't such a thing as game-to-game momentum in a computer simulation and even in the real deal, such a concept is probably overblown. But if we allow ourselves a leap of imagination, we can look at Saturday as the night Fredette turned the corner. We'll see what happens next.
Through last night, we've played the 89 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
REMINDER: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. BOBCATS 121, JAZZ 107: The struggling Jazz got off to a quick start before Kemba Walker keyed a 9-0 run in the second quarter to give Charlotte a three-point lead. Then Tyrus Thomas went to work, scoring 10 points in the last 5:36 of the first half to give Charlotte a 60-49 halftime advantage. It was D.J. Augustin's turn in the third as the former Texas point guard poured in 18 points as the Bobcats led by as many as 25. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way for the Bobcats, who continued their win-one, lose-one pattern and climbed over .500 on the season. Utah lost its sixth straight and the 121 points the Jazz surrendered was no surprise: Utah entered the game 25th in defensive efficiency. Corey Maggette scored 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting for Charlotte, while Augustin also scored 27. Devin Harris had 26 points and 14 assist for Utah but shot just 6-of-18 from the floor.

CELTICS 93, CAVALIERS 79: Jeff Green's bucket gave the Celtics a two-point lead at halftime, capping a close and low-scoring first half. Paul Pierce scored 12 points in the third quarter as Boston gradually pulled away. Not a lot of drama in this one as the Celtics improved to 5-1. Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 14 points but shot just 4-of-12. Boston's stars were much more efficient. Kevin Garnett shot 8-of-9 and had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Paul Pierce also scored 20, doing so on 7-of-10 shooting.

KNICKS 123, PACERS 104: The Knicks were looking for their third straight win against a Pacers team that just had a three-game winning streak snapped. New York led by just a point after one quarter despite Amar'e Stoudemire's 18-point period. The second quarter was the same story. Stoudemire pushed his first-half total to 26, but the Knicks led just 60-58 at the break. Stoudemire tacked on 10 more points in the third, but this time was aided by a 12-point quarter from Chauncey Billups as the Knicks found some breathing room. The fourth quarter was Carmelo Anthony's time as the high-scoring forward netted 12 of his 22 points and the Knicks breezed across the finish line. Stoudemire finished with 43 points and hit 19-of-20 from the line. The Knicks hit 38-of-42 from the charity stripe as a team.

BULLS 117, KINGS 81: All Fredette's early heroics accomplished was to keep the Kings close in the early going. But the Bulls built a comfortable first-half lead then exploded to a 36-11 third period, putting the game on ice. Derrick Rose had 35 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists for Chicago. Joakim Noah added 12 points and an NBA season-high 23 rebounds. Fredette shot 8-of-14 for Sacramento, but the rest of the Kings combined to shoot just 33 percent from the floor.

ROCKETS 118, WARRIORS 95: Charles Jenkins, buoyed by his second-place ranking on our rookie WARP leaderboard yesterday, scored six quick points to give Golden State the early lead. Kevin Martin sparked an 11-point run in response and the Rockets led by 11 after one. Jenkins and Lou Amundson led an eight-point burst in the second to pull Golden State within three. Rookie Klay Thompson got hot, scoring 12 of of his 17 first-half points in the second, but Houston led by five at the break. Martin scored 12 of his game-high 33 in the third as the Rockets build a comfortable lead before pulling away in the fourth. Thompson scored 19 and Jenkins added 18 for Golden State but there was a wide variance in efficiency: Thompson shot 6-of-18; Jenkins was 5-of-6.

GRIZZLIES 124, RAPTORS 96: The Grizzlies were looking for their third straight win but again were missing Zach Randolph from the lineup, while the Raptors were trying to snap a three-game skid. Jerryd Bayless' three put Toronto up four early in the second, but Shane Battier and Rudy Gay led a 13-2 burst to give Memphis the upper hand. The second half was all Grizzlies. Gay led the way with 33 points. O.J. Mayo added 19 and shot 9-of-11. Andrea Bargnani had another nice outing for Toronto but got little help. James Johnson shot 2-of-10 and put up a diabolical stat line: six points, six rebounds, six assists. Woe to you oh Earth and sea ...

SUNS 100, BUCKS 89: The Suns entered with a league-best 5-1 mark while the Bucks had lost three in a row. The Bucks built an early nine-point lead before an 11-0 Suns run was capped by Mickael Pietrus' three to start the second quarter. The game was tied at the break, a welcome sign on a night otherwise replete with blowouts. The game stayed tight in the third. Steve Nash's layup put Phoenix up five, but the Bucks answered with a six-point surge. Phoenix went back up by six, but Milwaukee scored eight in a row and led by one entering the fourth. Milwaukee increased the lead to seven, but Phoenix pushed back with a eight-point run. That was capped by Nash's hoop that put the Suns up 88-87 with 3:01 to play. Stephen Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 2:47 left, giving the Bucks a one-point lead and setting up a fantastic finish. Right? Not so fast. Milwaukee didn't score again, Phoenix reeled off the final 12 points of the game and the Suns improved to 6-1. Marcin Gortat's free throws capped the scoring and gave Phoenix the only double-digit lead either squad had in the game.

SPURS 83, HORNETS 68: After starting 2-0, the Hornets had dropped three straight and Monty Williams' squad look to get well at San Antonio, where Williams once stalked the sidelines as Gregg Popovich's assistant. Slow tempo was sure to ensue. Manu Ginobili scored 10 in the first and San Antonio led by seven in the second before New Orleans reeled off 12 in a row. The game was tied 40-40 at the break. Popovich orchestrated one of his signature clampdowns in the third, as the Hornets scored just three points over the final 7:20 of the period. It didn't get any better during New Orleans' 12-point fourth quarter and the Spurs won going away. Chris Paul went down in the first quarter, which might explain the Hornets' offensive struggles the rest of the way. He is expected to miss New Orleans' next game.

TRAIL BLAZERS 105, PISTONS 100: The Blazers entered the game 1-4 and had lost three straight, but they've been better than that. Portland had faced the league's toughest schedule against teams with a cumulative .704 winning percentage. Ouch. No offense to Detroit, but Nate McMillan had to be relieved to see the Pistons pop up on the schedule. Unfortunately, the Pistons didn't exactly lay down. Charlie Villanueva, who came into the game leading the league on a points-per-minute basis, scored to draw Detroit within one midway through the third quarter. Portland responded with a 12-1 surge to finally find some breathing room. Later, Rodney Stuckey hit two free throws to draw Detroit within four with 2:47 to play, but Portland held on down the stretch for the much-needed win. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 32 to lead all scorers, while Villanueva scored 24 in just 18 minutes. Take that, Kevin Garnett.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
