We're beginning our third week of Sim Season and as things settle down and we begin to feel the rhythms of the long slog of an NBA campaign, we get a sense of just how much we've lost to the league's labor situation. In any event, we keep marching on.
It's Monday, which means Power Rankings. Last week, I chose to disassociate myself from the Power Rankings as much as possible, even though it's my formula. This week, I'll take credit for this glimpse into how Sim Season's hierarchy appears to be shaking out. It really doesn't take that long for NBA teams to slot themselves. It won't be till the middle of December or so before we can be confident that our rankings have outlasted early-season schedule disparities, but even now, we are beginning to get a sense for each team's baseline strength.

NOTE: POW, our formula for a team's power rating, is an estimate of
a team's "true talent" level expressed as wins per 82 games. The
formula takes into account point differential, home-road performance,
record in close games and strength of schedule.
Through last night, we've played the 95 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. TIMBERWOLVES 109, NETS 82: Minnesota and New Jersey entered Sunday's game in Newark with 3-2 records, both teams among the pleasant surprises during the early part of Sim Season. The T-Wolves jumped out to the early lead thanks to a 19-point first period from Michael Beasley. Anthony Randoph came off the bench for an 11-point second quarter as Minnesota surged to a 17-point halftime lead. It just got worse for the Nets from there. Beasley scored 26 to lead Minnesota, though he took a beastly 30 shots to get there. Kevin Love happily played functionary, scoring 10 points with 12 boards and six assists. Ricky Rubio had eight points, eight assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

CLIPPERS 117, 76ERS 101: Philly's 3-2 start to the season has been solid, but its start to Sunday's game at the Staples Center was not. All five Clippers starters scored during a 15-2 burst to begin the game. Mo Williams' trey put L.A. up by 12 late in the first quarter and the Clippers led by double digits for the remainder of the game. Williams led the way with 37 points and hit 6-of-7 from three-point range. The Clips hit 12-of-25 from deep as a team. The Sixers actually shot a better percentage on treys (11-of-22) but couldn't overcome L.A.'s 59-percent showing from the floor.

MAGIC 95, HAWKS 78: Orlando and Atlanta slogged through the first quarter with the Magic holding a narrow lead. In the second, rookie Justin Harper's eight points keyed a 12-4 run for Orlando, which led by 11 at the break. Orlando increased the lead to 28 in the third. Atlanta closed within 11 in the final quarter but never seriously threatened as the Magic won its fifth in a row. It wasn't pretty--Gilbert Arenas led the Magic with just 14 points--but Orlando forced 19 Atlanta turnovers.

WIZARDS 102, BULLS 96: With the Wizards looking for their first win, Andray Blatch (12 points) went toe-to-toe, figuratively speaking, with Derrick Rose (13 points) in the first period, though the Bulls came away with a four-point advantage. In the second, Washington went ahead on Shelvin Mack's three-pointer and led by eight at the break. John Wall scored on a layup and free throw to begin the second half, capping an 11-point Wizards run. The Bulls rallied, with Luol Deng's three and Kyle Korver's layup capping an 11-2 burst that put Chicago back in front. The Bulls stretched the lead to seven by the end of the third. The Bulls went up by 10 in the fourth, but Washington went on a 21-3 burst and snatched its first victory. John Wall led the way with 23 points, five rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocks.

THUNDER 113, RAPTORS 91: Oklahoma City began the process of digging out of its early hole with a win at Chicago on Thursday and looked to get even healthier with the 1-5 Raptors coming to town on a four-game losing streak. Sure enough, the Thunder jumped out to a 15-4 lead, lead by 15 after one quarter, 20 at halftime and led by at least 13 for the entire second half. Kevin Durant scored 29 to lead OKC and was aided by 21 points from rookie Reggie Jackson, who added seven assists and a couple of steals. DeMar DeRozan led the Raptors with 29 points.

LAKERS 124, PISTONS 91: The Pistons led early but Kobe Bryant scored 11 points during a 12-2 run to give the Lakers a double-digit advantage. By halftime, the lead was up to 33 and Bryant had 19 points. The Pistons cut the lead to 29 a couple of times in the second half, but that was as close to drama as the game got. Bryant finished with 36 points.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
