Wednesday would have been the most hyped night of NBA basketball so far this season. It was right there on the national broadcast schedule that was released back in July. Doubleheader on ESPN. First up: Celtics-Heat in their first meeting of the season. The nightcap? Knicks at Nuggets in Carmelo Anthony's return to Denver. Would have been exciting, right?
If the results from Sim Season are any indication, it would have been a night well worth hyping. The Boston-Miami game went into overtime despite a first-half injury to LeBron James. And Anthony had a nice individual game, but the Nuggets still won handily over New York. One can envision a headline of "Carmelo's Comeuppance." Heck, I think I'll use that.
There were 11 other games last night as well, so we would have been wearing out our remote control, surfing from one League Pass channel to the next.
Through last night, we've played the 117 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
REMINDER: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price.
NOTE: The offer has been extended and now expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Nov. 20. Enjoy!
BOBCATS 102, CAVALIERS 91: Charlotte entered the game 3-3 but hadn't won two in a row yet this season. It's been win one, lose one so far for the Bobcats. The young Cavaliers have struggled offensively (29th in offensive efficiency) out of the gate. This one stayed tight until the fourth quarter, when a 10-0 Bobcats put Charlotte up by 11, an advantage which stood up the rest of the way. The offensive problems continued for Cleveland, which hit just 3-of-19 from downtown and were outscored 13-4 on second-chance points. Corey Maggette led a balanced Charlotte attack with 16 points.

SUNS 118, RAPTORS 102: The Suns were looking for their fifth straight win in the finale of a six-game road trip, while the Raptors were trying to snap a five-game skid. Score another one for the surprising Suns, who are now an NBA-best 8-1 on the season. Marcin Gortat, one night after his tip-in at Detroit beat the Pistons, had 27 points and 13 rebounds. Gortat scored 23 of his points after halftime, helping Phoenix erase a six-point deficit.

HEAT 90, CELTICS 88, OT: Miami played most of the game without LeBron James, who exited in the first half because of an injury. James returned in the fourth quarter and played the overtime. He's not expected to miss any additional games. He did miss much of a game in which neither team was ever able to get a double-digit lead. Boston led by six on Rajon Rondo's runner in the lane with 4:12 to play in regulation. Miami got a three from James Jones and a layup from Chris Bosh to close within one. In the final minute, Paul Pierce scored to put Boston up three. Both teams had an empty possession, then Mike Bibby drilled a three with two seconds to go, sending the game into overtime. In the extra session, the Celtics went up five on Pierce's layup with 2:46 left. Miami scored the next seven points, a run capped by James' jumper with 1:22 to play. Rondo tied the game with a jumper, the Bosh scored in the lane with 52 seconds left. Boston rookie JuJuan Johnson threw the ball away with 32 seconds left and Boston elected not to foul. Johnson stole the ball with five seconds left but the Celtics weren't able to get another shot off. Johnson, playing big minutes because of an injury to Jermaine O'Neal, had 16 rebounds but shot 2-of-15 from the floor.

TIMBERWOLVES 98, BUCKS 83: The revamped Timberwolves were looking for their third straight win and fifth in six games. This from a team that did not win more than two in a row all of last season and dropped its last 15 games. Well, make that three wins in a row for the League's most surprising team. Minnesota got 28 points and 17 rebounds from Kevin Love and held the Bucks to 38 percent shooting. Rookie Ricky Rubio (say that out loud three times) had seven points and 11 assists for the Wolves.

HORNETS 99, ROCKETS 88: Give the Rockets credit for making this a game. New Orleans jumped all over Houston at the start despite the absence of injured point guard Chris Paul, getting points from all five starters during an 18-2 opening run. But Houston battled back, cutting the lead to two on Luis Scola's bucket late in the first half. Houston never could quite get the lead, but Courtney Lee trimmed the Hornets' lead to one with a three late in the third quarter. The Hornets responded with an eight-point run and finally pulled away. Jarrett Jack had 26 points, six rebounds and six assists, playing 46 minutes in Paul's stead. The Rockets lost despite outscoring New Orleans 24-2 on fastbreak points and 16-2 on second-chance opportunities.

THUNDER 114, NETS 99: After an exciting start, the Nets entered on a four-game losing streak. The season has been polar opposite for OKC, which started slow but went into the game with a four-game win streak. The trends continued, but the Nets made a game of it on the Thunder's home floor. Oklahoma City led the entire way until Deron Williams' one-man six-point run put the Nets up three late in the third quarter. OKC responded and led by three entering the final quarter. To that point, it had been quite a duel between Williams (30 points through three quarters) and Kevin Durant (34). In the fourth, Williams scored in the lane and Damion James hit a pair of free throws, putting the Nets up three with 7:39 to play. Rookie Reggie Jackson sparked a nine-point Thunder run, and the Nets never led again. Durant scored 37, raising his league-leading scoring average to 34.1. Williams had 36 points and 12 assists.

CLIPPERS 97, SPURS 85: The NBA schedule always offers up a few head-scratchers and we had one in San Antonio, where the Spurs entered their matchup with the Clippers as a solid 11-point favorite. The Spurs had won five of six and all three of their home games this season. But the Clippers stole a page from Gregg Popovich's playbook and held San Antonio to 31 points in the first half. L.A. scored the last eight points of the half to lead by 11 at the break. The Spurs had an eight-point run of their own, cutting the lead to one in the third. Finally, San Antonio tied the game on Manu Ginobili's three at the start of the fourth. However, Mo Williams answered with a three of his own, Blake Griffin scored twice in a row and the Clippers went back up seven and pulled away. A stunner. Williams scored 34 points on 12-of-16 shooting for the Clippers, who also got 19 points and 17 rebounds from Griffin. San Antonio rookie Cory Joseph had 10 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals but shot just 4-of-13.

BULLS 93, TRAIL BLAZERS 84: The Blazers faced another tough date on their brutal early schedule, welcoming an angry Bulls team to the Rose Garden that had lost two of three. Derrick Rose scored 15 of his 30 in the first as the Bulls built an 11-point advantage. Portland rallied, cutting the lead to two on Gerald Wallace's free throw late in the first half and trailed by three at the break. Chicago led by as many as 15 in the third quarter and cruised through the fourth, dropping Portland to 2-3 at home. Rose had 30 points and 10 assists. Portland had 19 offensive rebounds--eight from Marcus Camby--and outscored Chicago 19-6 on second-chance points, but shot just 34 percent from the field.

KINGS 109, WIZARDS 96: Somebody had to win, right? The teams entered the contest with a combined record of 2-12. Sacramento built a 16-point first quarter lead only to see the Wizards reel off 12 in a row, a run capped by Chris Singleton's three to begin the second period. The Kings recoved to lead by four at the break despite Singleton's 10 points. Nick Young's bucket to begin the fourth put the Wizards up three. The Kings answered with a 14-2 run, capped by Jimmer Fredette's bucket with 3:31 to play, and cruised in with the win. Fredette had 14 points and eight assists as one of six Kings to reach double digits. The Wizards got 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists from John Wall, but he also had seven turnovers. Singleton finished with a career-high 14 points.

NUGGETS 117, KNICKS 102: Melo's back! Boo!!! That was pretty much the sentiment at the Pepsi Center on Wednesday, as Carmelo Anthony played in Denver for the first time since his trade to the Knicks in February. Danilo Gallinari, one of the players the Nuggets acquired for Anthony, scored 10 first-quarter points as Denver built a quick 11-point lead. Chauncey Billups, who was warmly received in his return to his hometown, led a second quarter rally for New York. Toney Douglas hit a three at the second quarter buzzer to draw the Knicks within one at the break. Denver blitzed the Knicks in the third quarter and eventually led by as many as 20. Anthony scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting but also had a game-worst plus-minus of -16. Gallinari had 30 points, while rookie Kenneth Faried added nine points and eight rebounds.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
