We're 11.4 percent into the campaign and it already feels like Sim Season is moving away from the comforting anchor of reality. What I mean by that enigmatic statement is that early on, it was natural to refer to the changes the teams underwent in the offseason and to compare our initial results to what we expected. We were comparing the simulated league to the real league. Less than three weeks into the season, the simulation seems to have taken on a life of its own. Our fairy tale is generating its own story lines.
The Magic has certainly emerged as one of those neat little early-season narratives. The Magic lost its opener at home to Charlotte then traveled to Miami (in a virtual sense of course) and was pounded by Miami to the tune of 34 points. Since then, Orlando has reeled off eight straight wins, seven of them by double digits. As a result, the Magic stand percentage points behind the Heat at the top of the Eastern Conference. The rematch is Nov. 29 and we can already circle that date on our Sim Season calendars.
Through last night, we've played the 140 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the action. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
REMINDER: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price.
NOTE: The offer has been extended and now expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Nov. 20. TONIGHT!

MAVERICKS 116, HAWKS 98: The defending champion Mavericks rode a six-out-of-seven streak into Atlanta, which had won three of four to climb back to .500. The Hawks jumped out to an eight-point halftime lead with a balanced attacked led by 11 points each from Kirk Hinrich and Joe Johnson. The lead was gone by the middle of the third quarter, when a Dirk Nowitzki hoop put Dallas on top. The Mavericks surged ahead by 12 in the fourth quarter, but Johnson's three pulled the Hawks within six with 4:13 to play. The Mavericks, responding like champs, then reeled off 10 straight. Nowitzki scored six of those points and Dallas scored off the fastbreak on four straight possessions. Nowitzki, who entered the game just 1/10 of a point behind Kevin Durant for the league's scoring lead, racked up 31 more and added 12 rebounds. Shawn Marion's 16 boards led Dallas, which pounded the Hawks 57-36 on the glass. And let's not overlook Jason Kidd's vintage line of 12 points, seven rebounds and 17 assists.

BOBCATS 88, CAVALIERS 83: Baron Davis scored the game's first basket, then hacked D.J. Augustin on the ensuing trip down the floor, knocking the diminutive Bobcats guard onto the hardwood. It must of made the former Texas star mad, because Augustin hit both free throws and then drilled consecutive three-pointers, leading a 14-point Bobcats run. Charlotte led by 15 after the first and 13 points at the break. The Bobcats appeared to be cruising before Kyrie Irving capped a 10-2 run in the fourth with a bucket, reducing Cleveland's deficit to single digits. A 12-2 run a little later was finished off by back-to-back buckets from Antawn Jamison and Davis. The Bobcats led by just a point. Unfortunately for the Cavs, they were finshed scoring and the Bobcats sealed the win on baskets from Boris Diaw and Corey Maggette in the final minute.

MAGIC 118, HORNETS 91: The Hornets were trying to snap Orlando's seven-game winning streak, but the Magic wasn't having it. Orlando led wire to wire despite Chris Paul's 21 points and 16 assists. The Magic shot 51 percent from the field, hit 10 three-points, grabbed a third of its own misses and outscored New Orleans 18-6 on second-chance points. All the ingredients for a blowout. Which it was.

ROCKETS 125, NETS 116: Kevin Martin's 14 first-quarter points got the Rockets off to a hot start, but Jordan Farmar and Travis Outlaw hit threes during a 10-point Nets run early in the second quarter that tied the game. Houston finished the quarter strong and led by nine at the break behind Martin's 22 points. Martin tacked on 21 more in the second half as Houston held off a couple of Nets rallies that trimmed the lead to three points. Kyle Lowry had 15 points, six boards and 10 assists in support of Martin, who needed only 19 shots to compile his 43 points. Deron Williams had 24 points and 18 assists and Kris Humphries added 16 points and 16 rebounds, but the Nets dropped their sixth straight.

GRIZZLIES 115, TIMBERWOLVES 112: A wild back-and-forth opening quarter ended on mano y mano threes from Martell Webster and Shane Battier, leaving the Grizzlies up by a point. The second quarter was all Memphis, which pulled ahead by 17 by the end of its 72-point first half. My beloved T-Wolves chipped away at the deficit but still trailed by 12 with 8:12 to play. But you cannot contain the Timberwolves. Minnesota reeled off 12 in a row and tied the score on Michael Beasley's lay-up with 4:08 remaining. The teams traded baskets for a couple of minutes, then Rudy Gay's score in the lane put Memphis up three with 39 seconds to go. Darko Milicic answered with a jumper, but Rudy Gay hit two free throws. The T-Wolves had one last shot, but Wesley Johnson missed a three and Gay secured the rebound to complete the upset. One day after being declared Bradford Doolittle's favorite Sim Season player, Ricky Rubio had two points on 1-of-7 shooting and three assists in 23 minutes. What a bummer.

TRAIL BLAZERS 111, BUCKS 89: It was kind of an important early-season game for Portland. While the Blazers' record (3-6) was in part a product of a difficult schedule, things still appeared to be heading in the wrong direction. Portland was coming off back-to-back losses to Chicago and Indiana in which they scored well under a point per possession. The Blazers traveled to Milwaukee for the second of a four-game road trip, hoping to get well against the Bucks, who had dropped six straight. Portland jumped out to a 14-point lead after the first behind 13 points from Wesley Matthews. The Blazers led by 20 at the half and eased in for the much-needed win. The Blazers controlled the boards and got 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from Brandon Roy. The Bucks got five three-pointers from Carlos Delfino, but the rest of the roster was 0-of-14 from deep.

SPURS 115, KINGS 91: The Spurs were trying to rebound from back-to-back losses, always a good time to welcome the 2-8 Kings to town. Sacramento stayed close for a 1 1/2 quarters, but Tiago Splitter keyed a 12-2 second-quarter run for San Antonio, and the Spurs spent the rest of the game increasing their lead. Tony Parker scored 29 points and harrassed Jimmer Fredette into a 4-of-17 shooting performance.

NUGGETS 123, WIZARD 96: Our system can kick out some unsightly point spreads early in the season but it was still startling to see it register Denver as 41-point favorites against the Wizards with over 10 percent of the season in the books. That tells you a lot about how the season has gone so far for these teams. Wouldn't you know it? Washington scored the first nine points of the game, a spurt capped by a Rashard Lewis trey and still the Nuggets led nine after one quarter. Denver went on an 18-2 run in the second and pushed the lead to 30 at one point in the first half. Could they actually cover that 41-point spread? Not quite. The Wizards had 10-point run in the third to trim the lead to 16, but the Nuggets bounced back and actually led by 37 before the Wizards closed the gap down the stretch. So the Nuggets came up "short" but it's a small victory for Washington nonetheless. Very small.

BULLS 113, CLIPPERS 96: Luol Deng has had a solid but quiet start for the Bulls, but he stood out on Saturday with 15 first quarter points. Nevertheless, the Clippers led by 12 midway through the second quarter. Deng capped a 10-2 run as Chicago edged closer and finished with 23 points by the break, at which the Bulls trailed by just a point. Mo Williams heated up in the third, scoring 14 points and leading a 10-2 run to finish the quarter that left the Clippers up by four. Deng scored early in the fourth to knot the score, then Derrick Rose took over, scoring 13 points down the stretch as the Bulls pulled away. Chicago won its third straight and improved to 3-1 on the eight-game circus trip--the annual stretch of road games dictated by the circus that takes over the United Center each November. The Bulls outscored the Clippers 37-16 in the fourth as Deng finished with a season-high 34 points.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.
