Sim Season is entering its home stretch and will soon pass the torch to real-life NBA basketball. Before we can do that, we have to crown a champion. After all, why else would we have gone to all the trouble? We'll start with first-round postseason results for the East today. Each recap will consist of a series narrative penned by yours truly, along with game-by-game line scores and boxes. We'll release a new round every couple of days and wrap up on Dec. 8--the day before training camps open and free agency begins.
Before we get to the playoffs, there is one thread I want to tie up. I mentioned in a bullet item in my regular-season wrap-up the other day that the individual game-high scoring total for the season was posted by Andrea Bargnani--61 points, against Boston, on Feb. 1. That raised more than a few eyebrows. The most points Bargnani has scored in an actual NBA game is 41, which came just under a year ago against the Knicks. There have been some bonafide flukes that have topped 50 points in the league's long history. Willie Burton is the first to leap to mind.
There haven't been any 60-point performances that I would subjectively classify as flukes, at least not in the way that Burton or Tony Delk leap out on the list of 50-point scorers. But there have been some surprises and this is something we can quantify by measuring what percentage of points a player's career night accounted for his eventual career total. When Burton scored 53 against the Heat in 1993, his final tally turned out to be 1.6 percent of his career total of 3,243. Four players on the 50-point list got one percent or more from one big night: Burton, Freeman Williams, Tony Delk and Walt Wesley. Flukes.
The highest percentage and the biggest fluke on the 60-point list is the 63 points put up by Jumpin' Joe Fulks in 1949. However, that's not a fluke in the way we're talking about. Fulks was a legitimately great player, a Hall of Famer who won the NBA's first two scoring titles. That he scored so many points in the pre-shot clock era was a remarkable feat, more an achievement than a fluke. The Warriors only averaged 83 points that season and when Fulks scored 63 on Feb. 10 against the Indianapolis Jets, it came in Philly's highest-scoring game of the season--just 108 points. It was not only the league's first 60-point game, it was also the first time a player topped 50. It was an early watershed performance in professional basketball.
As for Bargnani, we're talking about a guy who is talented enough to have been the top overall pick of the 2006 draft. He averaged over 21 points per game last season. If he had actually scored 61 points in a game, it would account for 1.1 percent of his career total to date. So it would rate as a "surprise" but not a "fluke" -- he's going to be piling on points for a long time. I don't know if Bargnani will actually score 61 points in a game but if he did, it wouldn't be shocking. All it takes is for talent, luck and the right indifferent opponent to converge all on the same night. Embrace the randomness. Here's the box:

Bargnani had 22 points after one quarter, 36 in the first half and completed his amazing night with a 16-point fourth quarter. He passed the 60-point mark on a basket with six seconds left in the game. And he did all of this with Kevin Garnett as his primary defender. Amazing. Oh yeah--the Raptors lost and Bargnani had the worst plus-minus figure on the team.
Through today, we've played 1,230 games, or 240 more than the NBA will, and one round of playoffs as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.

Blah, blah, Miami beat the Bobcats, blah. The exciting thing is that the Bobcats won a game. Miami shot 56 percent and won going away in the first game even though the game was tied at halftime. In Game Two, Miami jumped out a big early lead and cruised. Charlotte faced a must-in contest in Game Three, but Miami broke the game open in the second quarter and seized the 3-0 lead. That brings us to Game Four. The Bobcats reeled off a 15-point run and held Miami to 10 points in the second quarter to build a nice lead. Miami rallied and led by five with 3:18 to play. But the Bobcats went on a six-point run, capped by Kwame Brown's free throws. Mario Chalmers scored to put Miami ahead, but Brown scored in the lane and Charlotte held Miami scoreless over the last 1:48. In Game Four, Miami didn't mess around, leading by over 20 points for most of the second half and closing out the series.

CHICAGO 4, ATLANTA 0
This was a rematch of a second-round series from last year in which the Hawks gave the Bulls more trouble than anybody expected. This time around, it was all Bulls in the first round's only sweep. The Bulls and Derrick Rose set the tone in the very first quarter of the series. Rose scored 14 points his 37 points in that quarter and Chicago jumped out to a 32-16 lead and was never challenged in the game. The second game was a dead ringer for the first--Rose scored 15 of his 39 in the first, the Bulls jumped to a 10-point lead and Atlanta never led after halftime. The Hawks finally slowed Rose in Game Three and held a nine-point lead entering the fourth quarter. But the Bulls outscored Atlanta 35-19 in that final period as Rose scored 13 of his 26. The beaten Hawks laid down in the last game, falling behind by 18 in the first half. Rose turned distributor in that one, doling out a series-best 15 assists.

BOSTON 4, INDIANA 1
If the Pacers played the first three games like they did the last two, this would have been a good series. In the first game, Boston outscored Indiana 32-2 in the paint--TWO!--and held the Pacers to 32 second-half points. Poor shooting sunk the Pacers in Game Two, as Darren Collison (1-of-10) and Danny Granger (5-of-20) were both off. Boston blew the series open with a breathtaking display of efficiency in Game Three. Ray Allen scored his game-high 42 points on 16-of-24 shooting and hit 7-of-9 from deep. Paul Pierce added 30 points on 12-of-17 shooting. Rajon Rondo ran the show, dishing out 19 of Boston's 40 assists as the Celtics shot 62 percent from the field. That made Indiana's Game Four win too little, too late, but it was nice for the Pacers anyway. With Boston closing in on the sweep, Granger and Collison scored key points in the final minute to get Indiana into the win column. Boston closed out the series in Game Five, but Indiana made the Celtics earn their way into the second round. Paul Pierce's late basket in regulation sent the game into overtime. Allen's three put the Celtics up four with 13 seconds left in the extra session and Granger's three with three seconds left wasn't enough to keep Boston from advancing.

ORLANDO 4, NEW YORK 3
If these Dwight Howard rumors turn out to be true and the franchise center is traded away from Orlando before the season starts, this will turn out to be a bittersweet passage in Sim Season. That will especially be true if Howard were to wind up with the Knicks. (Which he won't--that's not even a rumor.) Howard was the difference as Orlando outlasted New York in the East's best first-round series. Howard's big game didn't help in the first game, as Carmelo Anthony rolled up 49 points and shot 26-of-29 from the foul line in a Knicks rout. Worse, Howard was hurt and missed Game Two. New York took advantage of his absence and took a 2-0 lead with a two-point escape. Orlando took a lead on Jameer Nelson's free throws with 56 second left, but Amar'e Stoudemire tied the game from the line, then won it on a basket at the buzzer. Howard was back in Game Three, scoring 27 points and grabbing 17 rebounds as the Magic got back in the series. Anthony was at it again in Game Four, pouring in 42 as the Knicks took a commanding 3-1 lead. Orlando's Howard-led defense held New York to 34 percent shooting in Game Five and the Magic stayed alive. He was at it again when the Magic evened the series in Game Six, grabbing 18 rebounds and helping hold Stoudemire to 4-of-16 shooting. In the decisive game, Howard scored 26, Anthony shot 3-of-13 and the Magic held on in a close game down the stretch. After blowing such a lead, one can only imagine the post-series howls emanating from the Big Apple.x
