We've reached the end of the long and winding road of Sim Season. When we started, we didn't know if there would be a real NBA season and at times it seemed like there wouldn't be. Thankfully, that is not so and starting tomorrow, the business of basketball is back to normal, if a bit in arrears. We end things on an appropriate note. The Heat and Thunder square off for the title which--spoiler alert--goes a full seven games. This I know because I extracted the files from the zip I received from Strat and there were seven of them. I do not yet know whom our champion is, at least as I type these words. Borrowing yesterday's format, I'll unveil the results one game at a time. Agate follows at the end.
I hope this series helped to fill some of the void created by the lack of pro games over the last few weeks. I received a lot of great response from readers and I think we picked up a number of new Basketball Prospectus followers from the Strat-O-Matic community. Hopefully they will stick around now that they've found us. I hope we similarly turned a few people on to the joys of Strat-O-Matic basketball. Thanks again to the good people at Strat for working with us on this project. It's been a great partnership--just the beginning, I hope.
Through today, we've played 1,230 games, or 240 more than the NBA will, and a full round of playoffs as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.

G1--THUNDER AT HEAT: A Heat-Thunder matchup has a lot of built-in storylines for the talking head circuit. Most of it would tie into the summer of 2010, when Miami's Big Three came together to the consternation of many. Meanwhile, the Wally Cleaver of the NBA--Kevin Durant--did the Right Thing and signed an extension with the Mayberry Thunder. (Okay, I'm mixing 1950s references there. Sorry.) Needless to say, Oklahoma City would be the favorite of the masses in this meeting and even though the NBA's traditional powers are absent from the pairing, one thinks the television ratings would be favorable. Game one is in South Beach. Durant starts it with a three-pointer 14 seconds into the game and we're off. Durant scores eight and OKC leads 29-26 after the first quarter. James Harden scores the first five points of the second quarter and the Thunder lead 34-26. Miami closes the gap thanks to a surprising contribution from Norris Cole, who scores eight points in the first half of the second quarter. OKC closes the half strong and Durant's layup at the buzzer gives the Thunder a 46-38 lead at the break. The lead is erased early in the third quarter when Mario Chalmers sparks an eight-point run. It was back and forth for the rest of the period and Miami leads 65-64 headed into the fourth. Nick Collison's free throws gives Oklahoma City a 77-71 lead with 8:15 to go, but Miami scores the next seven points to regain the lead. Mike Bibby scored the last two points of the rally. Miami gradually builds a comfortable lead as Oklahoma City goes cold down the stretch. Miami wins 92-85 and strikes first blood.
G2--THUNDER AT HEAT: Game Two was close through the first half though Miami finishes strong and leads 48-40 at the break. Chris Bosh and LeBron James scored 11 points each. James and Chalmers each hit threes early in the third quarter and Miami extended its lead to 13. The Thunder scored the next 10 points, six by Harden, and close within 56-53. Then Chalmers and Dwyane Wade hit consecutive threes to spark a 12-point Miami spree. The rout is on. Miami has a second 12-point run later in the half, leads by as many as 31 and wins 102-76. James just misses a triple-double with a game-high 23 points, nine boards and nine dimes. Durant is held to 4-of-14 shooting. Miami is up 2-0 but there's bad news: Bosh is injured and will only return if the series goes seven games.
G3--HEAT AT THUNDER: Is this series going to be a blowout? If the Thunder can't win Game Three, that may be the case. OKC faces a must-win game on its home floor and plays like it in the first quarter. The Thunder's stubborn defense limits Miami to 17 points and OKC leads by seven. The lead stays in the 5-7 point range until late in the half when Russell Westbrook and Durant hit a combined six free throws in the last minute to give the Thunder a 47-36 halftime lead. A strong third quarter extends the lead to as many as 22 and OKC leads 79-63 going into the fourth quarter. Miami never makes a serious run and the Thunder cut the lead to 2-1 with a 119-103 win. Durant scored 33 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Harden had 16 on 7-of-8. The Thunder shot 66 percent from the field on its 59 attempts and was 8-of-10 from deep.
G4--HEAT AT THUNDER: The Thunder remained a part of the series with its Game Three win, but OKC has to win again at home or face the specter of Miami eliminating the Thunder at the Ford Center. Again, the Thunder start the game with the sense of urgency you'd expect, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. With the Thunder up six at the start of the second period. Eddie House goes off for Miami, scoring seven points during an 11-2 run and the Heat lead 30-27. Miami gradually extends its lead then explodes the final couple of minutes, finishing the half with a 9-0 run capped by Bibby's three. Miami is up 50-37 at the break. Wade's three-point play late in the third pushes the lead to 19 and the Heat cruises down the stretch, winning 106-94. The Heat lead 3-1 and can close out the series in Game Four. James continues his huge series with 36 points.
G5--THUNDER AT HEAT: It's pretty simple. Either the Thunder win Game Five, or the world gets nauseated by James and Wade hugging and dancing all over the court in Oklahoma City. Gag. After the Thunder build a modest early lead, James scores twice and James Jones hits a three during a nine-point Miami run. It's back and forth for the rest of the half until Durant's three gives the Thunder a 48-45 halftime lead. A seven-point run in the third gives the Thunder some breathing room, 59-50 and OKC leads by 12 after three quarters. In the fourth, Wade scores with 6:09 left to cut the lead to 91-86. OKC responds by scoring the next seven, holds off any further Heat runs and wins 106-92. The Thunder still trail 3-2 and head back to Miami for what they hope will be the last two games of the series, not just one.
G6--HEAT AT THUNDER: The bandwagon fans in Miami are out in full force to see LeBron James win his first NBA ring and the Heat win its second. The Thunder has other ideas. Harden scores 10 points and OKC builds a nice eight-point first quarter lead. Miami responds by scoring the last seven point of the quarter. Miami repeats the trick in the second-- falling behind by six this time only to again score the last seven of the quarter. Wade's jumper puts Miami up 47-46 at the break. The Thunder sprints out of the gates in the second half. Westbrook scores seven of an 11-point burst but just as he's heating up, he heads to the bench with his fourth foul. Miami edges back into the game and finally ties it on James' bucket to cap the third quarter. The fourth quarter is intense. Bibby hits a jumper to put Miami up 91-86 at the 6:09 mark. Serge Ibaka and Thabo Sefalosha score to trim the lead to one. A little later, Westbrook scores to put OKC up 94-93 with 4:20 to play. Mike Miller immediately drills a three-pointer for Miami. Kendrick Perkins ties it with two free throws. A couple of possessions later, James dunks off a fastbreak and Miami leads 99-96 with 3:16 left. Durant and Sefalosha score; OKC is up one. James hits two free throws and it's 101-100 with 1:30 on the clock. Durant scores with 1:11 left, OKC is up 102-101. And that's it--no one can score after that. The Thunder escape and force a Game Seven. Now we're talking.
G7--THUNDER AT HEAT: It all comes down to this. Game Seven. Speaks for itself, doesn't it? Westbrook starts the game with a hoop plus an and-one free throw to jump start the Thunder. Unfortunately, he gets injured and is done for the game. Oh no. Miami responds with a 13-2 run and leads by eight. Eric Maynor's three pulls OKC within four, but Bosh is going off on the inside with 10 first-quarter points and the Heat lead 26-20 at the end of the period. It's Bosh's first action since he was injured in Game Two. James Jones starts the second quarter with a three for Miami. Oh oh. Never fear--the Thunder score 10 straight to take the lead, a run featuring five points each from Durant and Reggie Jackson. Bosh stays hot for Miami, scoring three times in an 8-2 burst to put the Heat up 37-32. He's already got 16 points. Jackson scores off a break to tie the game at 40 and the rookie has 11 points in the half. It's Jackson and Maynor picking up the slack for the missing Westbrook. Then OKC doesn't score for a long time. Miami scores the game's next 14 points, a run that extends into the third quarter. It's 54-40 Heat before Maynor snaps the streak with a three. The Thunder gets the last two baskets of the third to cut the lead to six and Durant's free throws to start the fourth makes the score 71-67 Miami. The Heat's lead stays in that range for several minutes. Perkins scores with 5:22 left to make it 82-77. Then James drains a three. Then James dunks off a fastbreak. Then James dunks off a fastbreak again. It's a one-man, seven-point flurry in 1:05 of court time that puts the Heat in control, 89-77. The Thunder can get no closer than eight after that. James caps the scoring with two free throws in the final minute and Miami wins Game Seven 96-81. Bosh finishes with 32 points to put Miami in position, then James sealed the deal in crunch time. The King has his ring.
So that's it. The Heat beats the Thunder in a thrilling seven-game series to become champions of Sim Season. If a similar scenario plays out in the 2011-12 NBA season, it wouldn't be at all surprising. Will it happen? Beginning tomorrow, we find out.
