We don't know when there will be real NBA basketball but, hey, we'll be here doing this until June if we have to. Eleven more games were on Saturday's virtual calendar and the results were typical of a full night of NBA action. There were blowouts and nail-biters, hot hands and cold hands, surprises and I-told-you-sos. Much better to muse on these things than on the cynical happenings in the Big Apple.
I already prattled on about the Timberwolves yesterday. Well, Minnesota won again and currently sits a half-game out of first in the Northwest Division standings. Today, I'll focus on the undefeated: New Jersey, San Antonio, New Orleans, Denver and Phoenix. All five squads are 2-0 on the young season. The Nets have to rate as the big surprise on the list and, in fact, are the only team in the Eastern Conference yet to lose a game. If this keeps up, the Nets are going to build up some serious buzz for their first season in Brooklyn next year.
That's how it all played out on Saturday, through which we've played the 39 games the NBA hasn't as part of Sim Season, our Strat-O-Matic simulation of the locked out 2011-12 season. We'll be doing this every day, so check back tomorrow for the results of tonight's action. You can follow me on Twitter for periodic updates on the night's games. Watch for the #simseason hashtag.
A reminder: Strat-O-Matic veterans already know this, but the newest version of SOM's Computer Basketball Game (Version 9.0) was recently released. As it happens, our favorite gaming company is offering a discount over the weekend for all you lockout-weary fans who want to run your own simulations. Or maybe you just want to match wits with a fellow hoops fan, no matter where in the world he/she may reside. All you have to do is go to this page to place an order. When you check out, just enter the discount code LOCKOUT to get 15% knocked off the listed price. The offer expires at 11:59 p.m. EST this Sunday.
NETS 91, PISTONS 84: It was an unlikely matchup of unbeaten teams, though each squad had only played one game. Brook Lopez scored 13 points as the Nets jumped out to an 11-point lead, which they maintained until halftime. In the third, Deron Williams scored eight quick points out of the break, helping Jersey up its advantage to 19. The Pistons closed within six at one point, but the Nets went home with a drama-free win to improve to 2-0. Lopez scored 23 points, while Williams added 22 points and 10 assists. Rookie Marshon Brooks poured in 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 23 minutes off the New Jersey bench.

MAGIC 113, WIZARDS 84: Orlando entered thirsty for a win against the lowly Wizards after dropping its first two contests. Rookies Jan Vesely and Shelvin Mack keyed a 10-point Washington run in the second quarter that put the Wizards up by six. That was the high point for Flip Saunders' squad. After that point, Orlando outscored the Wizards 34-10, a surge that was capped by Dwight Howard's dunk in the third quarter. Orlando led by as many as 33 in sailing to its first win. Howard had his first big game of the season with 37 points and 13 rebounds, though he was just 7-of-14 from the line. John Wall shot just 2-of-14 for the Wizards.

BULLS 97, HAWKS 83: This one digs deep. Saturday would have marked the Bulls' home opener and I missed the whole scene--chatting with media friends in the press room, hanging around the locker rooms, Tom Thibodeau trying so hard not to say anything. Good stuff. Maybe soon. On the virtual court, the Bulls held a comfortable lead before Zaza Pachulia--yes, him--led an 11-point Hawks run that gave Atlanta a one-point lead late in the third quarter. The game remained close for awhile before Thibodeau's trademark defense stifled the Hawks down the stretch. Atlanta scored just four points over the last 9:04 in the game. Derrick Rose led all scorers with 22 points, but committed nine turnovers.

ROCKETS 97, JAZZ 91: Kevin Martin scored eight points during Houston's 13-3 run late in the third quarter that seemed to finally break open a tight game. However, Utah's Devin Harris capped a 17-8 surge with a layup at the 1:23 mark of the fourth to bring the Jazz within a point. Martin answered with his fourth three-pointer of the game, then sealed the deal one possession later with a pair of free throws. Martin scored 25. Goran Dragic scored 16 off the Houston bench and hit four threes of his own. Al Jefferson shot just 4-of-21 from the floor for Utah, which got a nice all-around performance from rookie Enes Kanter, who had seven points, six rebounds and four assists in 11 minutes off the bench.

PACERS 104, CELTICS 96: PACERS 104, CELTICS 96: Danny Granger scored 18 points as the Pacers built a 10-point halftime lead. Ray Allen led a Celtics charge in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points in less than two minutes to trim the Pacers' lead to three. That was as close as the Celtics got. Boston scored the first two points of the game, which turned out to be its only lead of the contest. Indiana won for the first time and dealt the Celtics their first loss. Allen scored 31 points, picking up the slack from Paul Pierce, who sat out with an injury. Jeff Green scored 17 starting in Pierce's place. Granger finished with a team-high 26 points for Indiana and led the Pacers' 12-of-20 showing from three-point range by hitting five treys.

BOBCATS 104, GRIZZLIES 103: BOBCATS 104, GRIZZLIES 103: In a controversial ending, Corey Maggette hit one of two free throws with less than a second remaining to give Charlotte the thrilling victory. Rudy Gay scored six of his 22 first-half to key an 11-2 Memphis run leading into the break, giving the Grizzlies an eight-point advantage. Charlotte climbed closer behind Tyrus Thomas' eight third-quarter points and went ahead in the fourth quarter as Augustin stayed hot. He scored eight points in a two-minute surge that left the Bobcats up seven with 2:43 to play. However, Memphis' Zach Randolph went to work, scoring six points during an 8-1 rally and sinking a short turnaround with two seconds to play, tying the score at 103. After a timeout, Maggette popped free off a screen, beating Randolph who had jumped out on a switch, and put up a runner as the clock expired. However O.J. Mayo, who had come over to contest the shot, was called for making contact with Maggette's shooting elbow, a call that replays suggested was incorrect.

TIMBERWOLVES 107, RAPTORS 97: I lauded the young Timberwolves in yesterday's post and with Toronto visiting the Target Center, Minnesota had a golden opportunity to move over .500 on the young season. The game was tied at the half, with neither squad able to get more than a six-point lead. Four points was the biggest advantage in the third quarter, which ended on Wayne Ellington three-pointer that left Minnesota up 77-76 entering the final period. That started a 14-4 Wolves run that finally gave them some breathing room. Toronto closed within four on Jose Calderon's free throws at the 2:34 mark, but Minnesota socred the last six points of the game and improved to 2-1. Ricky Rubio came off the bench for the first time as a pro, but scored nine points and had 11 assists in 25 minutes. Andrea Bargnani scored 29 points for Toronto but the Raptors sent just 3-of-18 from downtown.

MAVERICKS 112, THUNDER 96: The winless Mavericks faced another stern test against Oklahoma City and trailed early until a 17-point run put Dallas in the driver's seat midway through the first half. Shawn Marion scored nine points of his 25 points during the surge, during which the Thunder went scoreless for about 6 1/2 minutes. The teams traded runs in the third quarter and Dallas entered the final period with an eight-point lead. Then Kevin Durant went to work, hitting three three-pointers, the last of which brought the Thunder within three points with 8:21 to play. Finally, Dirk Nowitzki hit two treys and scored off a fastbreak during Dallas' 8-0 game-clinching run. Dallas outran the youthful Thunder (30-12 edge in transition) and thumped OKC in the paint to the tune of 24-6. Durant led all scorers with 35 points and hit six three-pointers.

BUCKS 112, KNICKS 78: The defensively-solid but offensive-challenged Bucks will take points where they can find them, and they found plenty in Carlos Delfino's red-hot shooting hand. Delfino hit four three-pointers in the first half of the second quarter alone, the last of which capped a 19-6 surge that boosted Milwaukee to a 22-point lead. Delfino hit another three--his sixth of the game--during a 14-0 Bucks run in the third quarter that put the game away once and for all. Long after the contest was decided, Delfino hit three-pointers seven and eight, the last of which came at the final buzzer. Delfino scored all 24 of his points from downtown and missed only once from beyond the arc. Amazingly enough, he was 0-for-4 from inside the line. Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony were the only Knicks to hit double digits but combined to shoot just 10-for-31. New York shot just 33 percent from the floor in the game. Milwaukee shot 18-of-28 from three-point land as a squad.

NUGGETS 113, WARRIORS 88: The Warriors were leading late in the first quarter when Andre Miller and rookie Jordan Hamilton keyed a 24-4 run that was finally snapped by a Klay Thompson basket with 3:46 to go in the first half. That was pretty much game, set and match for the 2-0 Nuggets. Danilo Gallinari hit 6-of-11 from downtown en route to 37 points to pace Denver. Miller had 14 points, five boards and five assists off the bench to offset a subpar peformance from Ty Lawson. Denver outscored the jump-shooting Warriors 32-8 in the paint.

HORNETS 119, KINGS 110: David West scored six of New Orleans' eight straight points to open the game and, sadly, the Kings never really made a contest of it. Sacramento closed within four on Tyreke Evans' fastbreak hoop at the 3:36 mark of the final quarter, but Chris Paul scored on a drive, was fouled, and sank the And-1 to re-establish the Hornets' upper hand. The Kings fell to 0-3 while the Hornets have won both of their early-season games. West finished with 34 points. John Salmons led the Kings with 24 points off the bench. Jimmer Fredette scored eight on 4-of-12 shooting and missed all four of his three-point attempts.

GLOSSARY
+/- (Plus-Minus) Raw data is from official box scores from NBA.com.
GR (Game Rating) Reflects a player's Points Created total, or the portion of his team's offense for which he gets credit based on his box score line. This number is then adjusted for estimated defensive performance based on box score counterpart productivity. GR is pace-adjusted so you can compare players from game to game.
PCP (Points Created Per Possession Used) An estimate of each player's points created per possession used, a measure of offensive efficiency. The stat accounts for a player's entire box score line, not just the scoring categories.
PLY% (Play percentage) An estimate of the percentage of a team's possessions on which the player was on the court.
USG An estimate of how many of those plays a player used by shooting, going to the line or committing a turnover, with a portion the team's offensive rebound total subtracted.
TEAM STATS
PACE: Estimated possessions in the game.
ORTG: A team's points per 100 possessions.
eFG%: Team's shooting percentage with an extra half-point added for each made three-point field goal.
oRB%: Percentage of a team's misses that they retrieved off the offensive glass.
TO%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a turnover.
FTA%: Percentage of a team's possessions resulting in a trip to the foul line.

I realize there will not be a Pro Basketball Prospectus if there is no NBA season, but what happened to the College BBall Prospectus? I searched for a post referencing when it would be released, but I could not find anything. Is CBP still a go?
